Clay Mabry

Mark Larsen
I woke up one morning in Dec 2025 and decided to write a musical using songs I wrote with composer Tom Shaw when I was just 22 years old. The music transports us to San Francisco in 1981 and Armstrong Station, a Western-themed gay bar in the Castro, where a circle of friends finds freedom, connection, and chosen family. Young Howard, a transplanted Minnesota farm boy who writes lyrics while driving a vending-machine route, meets composer Tom through an ad in the Bay Area Reporter. As their creative partnership takes shape, the people and experiences around them become songs.
Tom Shaw
Tom Shaw is a San Francisco–based composer, singer, pianist, and actor whose professional career spans more than five decades. His work includes musical theatre, film composition, and live performance. His current project is Armstrong Station, a song-driven musical co-developed with playwright and lyricist Mark Larsen. Set in San Francisco’s Castro District in 1981, the show features original songs written by Shaw and Larsen in the early 1980s. Decades later, the collaborators are revisiting the material and exploring its path to the stage. Shaw is seeking creative collaborators interested in helping develop Armstrong Station for theatrical production.
